Importance of Increasing the Vocabulary For a Fiction Author

Authors usually have vocabulary that they use on a regular basis. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. What makes up good writing is how well you put the words together and how the words themselves are. When you are reading a novel that is engaging, it is easy to get into it. Reread the novel again after reading and enjoying it. The goal is to examine how the work was written. How the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar are some of the things you should be mindful of. American and British authors write differently, this you should know.

The difference in use of some words, punctuation and spelling are the places these authors differ. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. There are standard rules that you should stick to when writing for either the American or British readers.

It is important that fiction authors expand their vocabulary base as it is possible. This can be done anytime when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. This seems to be general knowledge, but most authors do not usually do this. It is one of the many ways of building your vocabulary even though it is a logical thing to do. Another thing to do is to get a notebook or any other system that you desire, and make categories that suit your needs. When people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV and when you are reading you should be keen to listen. Be mindful of verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. There are words that you already use, the ones that you did not know and those you never thought of using, you will discover either if this. It is also great to keep a list of words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use. Use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room ‘ when describing the action of the eye.

Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. Use this list when making your draft.
